English is the third most spoken language in the world today with 373 million native speakers, only surpassed by Spanish with 485 million, and Chinese with 1.3 billion.

It is a West Germanic language, so much of the etymology of English words come from Anglo-Saxon roots, which is why its grammar and core vocabulary have similarities with German. However, English also has influences from other languages like Latin and its derivative Romance languages.
